The Bringing History Home project was designed and piloted by a partnership between the University of Iowa and Washington Community School District in Iowa. Since the 2001-2003 Washington pilot, the program has been implemented in five additional Iowa school districts including Creston, Perry, Maquoketa, BCLUW and Prairie. School districts in Michigan, North Dakota, Illinois, and Missouri are in various phases of adopting elements of the program.
The University of Iowa’s College of Education Center for Evaluation and Assessment has evaluated the project’s efficacy since the project began. Formative information gathered by the Center suggests BHH has a significant impact on teacher practice and student learning. Results from the Center’s study of BHH student learning outcomes will be released in the winter 2007-08.
Developing the history lesson plans and material on this site has been a labor of love for many people. Whether in front of the classroom or behind a web server, each participant shares a passion for history, children, and education. The Bringing History Home project is a testament to the process of working together toward a common goal. We hope you will find our material as engaging and helpful as we do and we offer it here, free.
